Gold and Spice Souk

Today Savannah, mom and I went to the Gold Souk. At the gold souk, we window shopped while dodging the men selling counterfeit handbags and watches. Then we ventured out for a walk to find the spice souk. Having not been there myself we went on directions we found in a Dubai travel book (which proved to be little help) and the directions of several shop keepers. The spice souk is located in a tiny narrow ally and is much smaller than what either of us expected. Shops in the spice souk are mostly owned by Iranians and sell just about any type of spice you could need or want including dried lemon, saffron, fresh vanilla, chille, cinnamon and dried roses (for rose water). The spices are kept in large open sacks and the shop keepers are more than happy to assist shoppers in their purchases, a common statement was "come in, looking is for free". If I knew how to cook with spices this would have been a great place to make a purchase but instead we walked away without any purchases but gained another new experience unique to the Middle East.
