Tonight we ventured out to Wangfujing Street. What was interesting to me was that on one side of the street there are high-end shops (Chanel, Rolex, etc..) and on the other side was the Wangfujing Snack Street. We were told that this was a must see. There is stall after stall of cheap items (all on a stick). Although we didn't see anyone eating anything other than some kind of toffeed fruit on a stick there were plenty of stalls that offered the same interesting items, so someone must be buying them. Among the things that turned our stomach the most was the bugs (with hard shells and still alive) which are deep fried while you wait, starfish, crab (with the shell), seahorse and pigeon (that looks like just the feathers are removed...but includes the head and bones. Evidently, these items are considered a delicacy in Chinese cuisine. This being said, we really didn't venture out much on the food. By the time we were done sight-seeing for the day, Savannah was ready to play a little and roam free, not sit at a restaurant table...plus after seeing these same items plus some made into dishes (even at fancy restaurants) we were a little afraid of what we were actually eating, especially given that many of the menus have pictures and just a little English.
Bon Appetit??
